Wynn Resorts, Limited is the latest major gambling company to unveil its third quarter revenue for 2020, which demonstrates huge losses year-over-year. This announcement comes after other leading gambling companies including Scientific Games and MGM have made similar revelations about the third fiscal quarter, though Wynn takes the title at the moment for the most significant losses — at least, in terms of percentage — presented for the third quarter so far.

Wynn’s Losses: A 77.5% Plummet From 2019

Last week, Wynn Resorts, Limited CEO Matt Maddox announced the company’s earnings for the third quarter of 2020. In total, operating revenues for the company raked in $370.5 million for this year’s Q3, a loss of more than $1.25 billion from the same period in 2019. At that time, operating revenues for 2019’s Q3 were $1.65 billion.

Net loss for this year’s third quarter at Wynn Resorts, Limited ended up at $758.1 million, a much greater sum than it had been during the same period in 2019. In 2019, net losses for Wynn Resorts, Limited in Q3 ended up at just $3.5 million. In total, these numbers indicate a 77.5% fall in operational revenues year-over-year.

Operational Losses By Wynn Property

Wynn’s third quarter report summarized how the operating revenues decreased at each of its international properties: the Wynn Palace, Las Vegas Operations, Encore Boston Harbor, and Wynn Macau. Wynn Palace had the greatest losses, with income falling $582.5 million in 2020’s third quarter year-over-year.

Next up was Wynn Macau, where revenue fell $422.9 million this year from where it had been last year. This is less of a surprise when considering how direly Macau, Asia’s gambling capital, has been impacted by the ongoing pandemic and subsequent casino lockdowns and tourism decline worldwide.

Wynn’s Las Vegas Operations had the second-least losses of any of Wynn’s international holdings, though they still suffered significantly, particularly when compared to Wynn’s Boston Harbor location. In Las Vegas, Wynn’s integrated resort-casino experienced operational revenue loss of $212.8 million in Q3.

Coming out on top, comparatively, is Wynn’s Boston Harbor location, which experienced revenue loss of $59.1 million during the third quarter of this year. This was despite a lockdown in Boston which lasted from March 15, 2020, until July 10, 2020, and despite ongoing strict health and safety regulations imposed by the city government.

Though The Numbers Look Bad, CEO Stays Positive

In comments about Wynn’s third quarter revenue, company CEO Matt Maddox maintained a positive outlook, reiterating — as other companies have throughout this year — that this has been a uniquely challenging time for the international gambling industry, particularly where it intersects with the tourism and hospitality industries in resort-casinos.

Specific Areas Of Promise And Growth

In his statement, Maddox pointed out elements of Wynn’s business which indicate resilience and, in some cases, development as the pandemic continues. He emphasized the success of Wynn Boston Harbor, explaining that the location, in fact, performed with a record high EBITDA in Q3 despite extenuating circumstances.

While the poor performance of Wynn’s location in Macau could not be ignored, Maddox remained optimistic that ongoing restrictions in the region were slowly becoming more lenient. By October, after the third quarter had already ended, he implied that numbers for the company were improving in Macau.

Wynn Interactive: A Beacon of Hope

A particular point of interest for Maddox in his statement was Wynn Interactive, the iGaming and sports betting platform run by the company best known for its brick-and-mortar integrated resort-casinos. Q3 of 2020 saw Wynn Interactive launch in New Jersey, which Maddox described as successful and promising.

Wynn Interactive Will Continue To Expand

As Maddox explained, the coming months will see Wynn Interactive continue to grow its presence in the US. At present, the iGaming platform — launched as a collaborative effort between Wynn Resorts and BetBull Limited, with 71% ownership by Wynn — is currently applying for licenses to operate in Tennessee and Virginia.

In his statement, Maddox implied that additional states had approved Wynn Interactive to operate, though he did not specifically name which states this would include. Given the number of states in the US which have legalized sports betting in the last year alone, this could include Pennsylvania, California, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, or elsewhere.

Could Wynn’s COVID Testing Efforts Be Linked To Revenue Losses?

In early October, Maddox announced that Wynn would be transforming part of its Las Vegas site into a coronavirus testing location. At the time, Maddox emphasized that this location would not just lead the trend for resort-casinos, but for COVID-19 testing broadly, with state-of-the-art medical technology and innovation.

Maddox implied that the test results would eventually be used to bring back business as usual to Wynn’s Las Vegas location. Guests who had received negative test results would be allowed to enter the casino and hotel, but would also — in an as-yet unprecedented move — be allowed to reenter beloved Vegas live entertainment, club, and restaurant options.

Now that Wynn has released its third quarter numbers, it is possible that this surprising move from Wynn foreshadowed the reveal from the company just last week that it had suffered such overwhelming losses during the third fiscal quarter. With additional cash flow from live entertainment and more guests, the company could rebound in Vegas.

After years of holdups, the casino projects are underway, but Wynn Boston Harbor hit a couple of different skids this year. The luxury resort recently announced construction revisions and increased costs for the multi-billion dollar project.

Wynn Boston Harbor revises retail plan

When the state granted Wynn one of the available gaming licenses, casino developer Steve Wynn sold the concept with the promise of retail. More than just a casino, Wynn Boston Harbor was going to be a high-end shopping destination.

Revised plans indicate there will be only 9,000 square feet of retail space. By comparison, the original plans set aside 56,000 square feet for shops.

Wynn Boston Harbor President Bob DeSalvio announced the changes at a March 2 meeting of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC). A total of ten retail scores have been scrapped from the plans. DeSalvio cited the retail economy as the reason behind the change:

“I’m sure everyone is aware of the retail work being in a bit of an upheaval at the moment. The heavy duty pressure to do online has moved many retailers to cut back on the numbers of stores.”

DeSalvio says the casino courted many of the high-end retailers on Newberry Street in Boston, but had trouble convincing the stores to relocate. Rather than lower the standard of retail tenant, the casino chose to revise the retail plans.

Casino will lose some retail revenue, but gain jobs

Instead of shopping space, the property will feature an additional ballroom in the convention area as well as more restaurant space.

There will be a single retail space called Wynn Collection. The store will house several high-end brands under a single roof, operated by the casino.

The loss of retail space will not result in the loss of jobs. The changes produced a net gain of 177 full-time positions at Wynn Boston Harbor.

Changes and construction costs balloon Wynn costs to $2.4 billion

The changes also mean there will be increased costs to bring the casino to fruition. Revamping the layout is not the only reason the budget is increasing, however.

DeSalvio cited unexpectedly high construction costs at the meeting as another reason costs were going up.

As a result, the project’s budget has ballooned from $2.1 billion to $2.4 billion.

At this price tag, Wynn Boston Harbor will cost as much to complete as high-end Nevada casinos The Palazzo and Bellagio. MGM Springfield, the other Massachusetts casino project, currently sports a $950 million price tag.

MGM Springfield has a scheduled opening of spring 2018. Wynn Boston Harbor will not open until 2019.
